  4. Rigid lenses are fitted such 
  5. that the back curve of the lens 
  6. approximately matches the 
  7. shape of the cornea.  There are 
  8. flatter curves in the periphery 
  9. of the lens to give some edge 
  10. clearance.  The lens should stay 
  11. reasonable centered on the 
  12. cornea and move with a blink.   
  13. Sodium fluorescein is used to 
  14. visualize the tears behind the 
  15. lens and to determine the 
  16. clearance of the lens from the 
  17. cornea.

  20. The fluorescein has to be illuminated with a blue (or UV) light source either from a hand held source or with the colbalt filter in the biomicroscope in order to obtain the fluorescence.
